AI chat on your own WhatsApp number
WhatsApp is where a lot of shops actually talk to customers. Here is what changes when an assistant answers it.
A WhatsApp number is the most personal channel a shop has, and the least forgiving. Messages arrive at midnight, in whatever language the customer thinks in, and nobody expects a menu of options.
Answer in the language they wrote in
This is the part rule-based tools cannot fake. A customer writing in Hebrew at 1am should get Hebrew back, with the right shipping threshold in shekels — not an English fallback and not a translated template.
The loop that gets numbers banned
WhatsApp delivers your own outgoing messages back to you. An assistant that does not filter its own replies will answer itself, forever, on a live number in front of real customers. Any tool you evaluate should be able to tell you exactly how it guards that.
Handoff has to be instant
On WhatsApp the customer is already in a one-to-one conversation, so "let me connect you" has to mean it. An assistant that asks permission to fetch a human, then waits, has spent the goodwill the channel gave it.
What it costs to get wrong here
WhatsApp is not a channel to experiment on quietly. A website widget answering badly is seen by whoever happened to open it. A bad WhatsApp reply lands in the same thread as messages from the customer’s family, and it stays there. Test against your own number before pointing anything at the one printed on your receipts.
Photographs, and admitting what it cannot see
Customers send pictures — a damaged item, a screenshot of an order, the shelf they are trying to match. An assistant that silently ignores the image and answers the text is worse than one that says it cannot see pictures and asks them to describe it. Check which yours does before a review tells you.
One number, one voice
If your team also replies from that number, the assistant and the people have to sound like the same shop. Agree the tone once and write it down, or customers will notice the seam exactly when they are already annoyed.
Common questions
Do I need a new number?
No — Starly answers the number you already give customers.
Can I take over mid-conversation?
Yes. Handoff hands the thread to a person and the assistant stops.
